The Symphony of Reason: Proofs of God
Friends, fellow spirits, and travelers seeking the light of understanding. We stand today before the greatest question that has ever echoed in the human mind. We are here to speak of the Supreme Intelligence, the First Cause of all things. The spirits tell us that to find proof of God, we need look no further than an axiom we apply to our most rigorous sciences: "There is no effect without a cause". This is the foundation of all logic. To deny it would be to claim that the magnificent symphony of the universe arose from the silence of nothingness.
But let us not be satisfied with a shallow understanding. As our minds expand, so too must our conception of the Divine. Let us examine four profound arguments, four pillars of reason, that lift our gaze from the dust of the earth to the grandeur of the Infinite.
One. The Argument of Linear Causation.
First, imagine a row of dominoes stretching back through the mists of time. This is the argument of Linear Causation. Every event we see is an effect of a previous event. You are here because of your parents; they were here because of theirs. The earth exists because a star was born; the star was born because gravity collapsed a cloud of gas. We see a chain of events stretching backward into the past.
Reason dictates that this chain cannot be infinite. If there were no first domino to fall, the second would never fall, and certainly, the last one, this present moment, would never have arrived. There must be a beginning. There must be a First Cause that set the river of time into motion. Spiritism teaches us that we cannot find this First Cause in the properties of matter itself. Matter is inert; it requires a force to move it. Therefore, we must conclude that there is a Prime Mover, an uncaused Cause that stands at the beginning of all history. As the spirits confirm: "There must always be a first cause".
Two. The Argument of Hierarchical Causation
But my friends, God is not merely a "pusher" who started the universe billions of years ago and then walked away. This leads us to a deeper, more immediate truth: Hierarchical Causation. Imagine not a row of dominoes falling in the past, but a chandelier hanging from a chain right now. The bottom link is held by the link above it. That link is held by the one above it. It does not matter if the chain has five links or five million links; if there is no ceiling to hold the entire chain, the chandelier falls.
This is the universe at this very moment. The atoms in your body are held together by forces; those forces depend on the laws of physics; the laws of physics depend on the fabric of space-time. Everything is "being held" in existence by something else. If we remove the sustaining cause for even a microsecond, the effect vanishes. Therefore, there must be a Sustaining Power, a "Ceiling" of reality, that is not held by anything else, but holds everything.
This aligns perfectly with the Spiritist teaching that "God is the Supreme Intelligence". God is not just a historical event; God is the active, sustaining foundation of reality. The universe is the hanging chain; God is the Anchor that holds it firm.
Three. The Argument of Actual and Potential.
Next, we arrive at the most subtle and powerful argument regarding existence: the distinction between the Actual and the Potential. Look at a piece of wood. It is cold. But it has the potential to be hot, to catch fire. Can the wood make itself hot? No. It cannot give itself what it does not have. To move from "potentially hot" to "actually hot," it must be touched by something that is actually hot like fire. "No potential can actualize itself".
Now, look at the universe. It is a realm of constant change. Things are born, they grow, they decay. The universe is a mixture of what is and what could be. It is full of potential. Because it is changing, it is fragile; it does not contain the reason for its own existence within itself. Therefore, there must be a Reality that requires no change, a Being that has no "potential" left to fulfill because It already possesses all fullness. We call this Pure Act. We call this God.
This philosophical truth is beautifully reflected in the attributes of God given to us by the spirits. We are told God is Immutable. Why? Because God is the unchanging, eternal Force of perfection that ignites the potential of the universe into the reality of life.
Four. The Argument of Volition, Proof of Love.
We have proven God exists. We have proven God sustains us. But a question remains, one that trembles in the heart of every sufferer: Does this Sustaining Power care? Is God merely a cold mathematical "Ceiling," or is God a loving Father? We need not rely on blind sentiment; logic itself provides the answer. Let us call this The Metaphysical Definition of Love.
Consider this: To exist is better than not to exist. Existence is the primary "good" of the universe. As we established with the argument of the Chain, God is the power holding you in existence right now. But God is Pure Act, He is perfect and complete. He needs nothing. He gains nothing from your existence. The Infinite cannot be "improved" by the finite.
So, why are you here? You are here only because God chooses for you to be here. In every microsecond, the Supreme Intelligence is making a voluntary decision to sustain you over the void of non-existence. And here is the key: In philosophy, the strict definition of love is "to will the good of the other." By willing your existence, your primary good, at every moment, without any need for you, God is, by definition, loving you. The very act of creation is an act of altruism. The Sustainer is not a cold force; the Sustainer is a Benevolent Volition.
This confirms the intuitive sentiment written in our souls and the Spiritist teaching that God is not only All-Powerful but Supremely Just and Good. We are not just "effects" of a cause; we are the beloved of a Creator. Conclusion Friends, when we weave these four arguments together, the picture is breathtaking.
• Linear causation tells us God is the Alpha, the beginning of time.
• Hierarchical causation tells us God is the Anchor, holding us firm in the present.
• The actualizer of potential tells us God is the Perfect Reality, he is all that is, and all that ever will be, the Immutable source.
• The Volition tells us that this Reality is Love itself, willing our existence with every breath we take.
Do not let pride blind you to this. Some may say this is all "chance." But "chance is blind". Blindness cannot build the eye that sees; chaos cannot build the mind that thinks. "The workman is known by his work". Look at the work! Look at the stars, look at the moral law within your heart, look at the intricate dance of the cosmos. These are not accidents. They are the brushstrokes of a Supreme Artist.
Let us walk from this place with our heads high and our hearts humble. We are not orphans of a cold universe. We are the cherished creations of a Supreme Intelligence that is Eternal, Immutable, AllPowerful, All knowing, and Supremely Just and Good.
