To the contrary, spirit life is a "continuous occupation," a ceaseless symphony of action that concurs in the harmony of the universe.

We must understand that idleness is not a reward; it is, in fact, a torment. As the spirits have told us, "eternal idleness would be eternal torture". Instead, the highest joy is found in utility. From the humblest mason to the grandest architect, every being has a role, a duty, and a purpose in the construction of God’s magnificent design.

1. The Universality of Knowledge and Labor. Do not believe that your current skills define your eternal existence. We are destined to inhabit all places and acquire knowledge of all things. The great painter or architect of today may have practiced a different art in a previous life, for it is incumbent upon us to know everything to perfect ourselves. We ascend the degrees of the scale, acquiring the necessary knowledge by practicing the most elementary functions before reaching the supreme degree of skill.

Therefore, even the spirits of the highest order are not at rest. Their occupation is sublime: they receive orders directly from the Creator, transmit them throughout the universe, and supervise their execution. Their activity is a delight because they know they are being useful.

1. The Nature of Missions. What, then, of our time here? What of the tasks we perform? We speak of "missions." A mission is not merely the grand destiny of a general or a prophet; the courier who carries a dispatch fulfills a mission just as surely.

Missions are varied and often beyond our comprehension. They can be carried out in the incarnate state, here in the flesh, or in the errant state of the spirit.

• The Guide: Some spirits take under their care individuals or cities, acting as guardian angels or protector spirits.

• The Incarnate Worker: For us on Earth, missions involve instructing human beings, improving institutions, or simply cultivating the soil. The farmer fulfills a mission as sacred as the one who rules or teaches, for everything in nature is linked.

Is a mission a burden imposed upon us? No. The enlightened spirit "asks for it and is happy to receive it". However, we must remain vigilant. While God’s general plans are assured, an individual spirit may fail in their specific task if they are not yet of a high order. If we fail, we must start the work over; we must suffer the consequences of the problems we have caused.

1. The Sacred Duty of Parenthood. Among the most vital missions entrusted to us is parenthood. It is, without any doubt, a mission and a very great duty. God places children under the care of parents so that we may guide them on the path of the good.

Be mindful! There are those who are more concerned with training the trees in their orchards to produce fine fruit than with training the character of their children. If a child fails due to parental neglect, the parent bears the punishment. Conversely, if a child is disposed toward evil, the parent’s merit is greater if they manage to divert that child from the dark path.

1. The Shadow and the Light. But what of those who seem useless? Those who live only for themselves? This idleness is temporary.

It weighs upon them, and eventually, the desire to progress stirs a need for activity. They will painfully expiate their intentional uselessness, often beginning in this world through weariness and dissatisfaction. And what of the conquerors? Those who bring calamity and destruction? Even they are often nothing more than instruments used by God. The tempests they create are often the means for enabling a people to advance more rapidly. God is just; all are rewarded according to their deeds and the honesty of their intentions.

Whether you are a genius enlightening humanity, a parent guiding a fragile soul, or a laborer in the field, you are an essential part of the divine plan. We are all traveling from world to world, learning, preparing, and purifying ourselves.
